LARGO DAS ARTES: DAY 20 - 21

DAY 21

I have some technical issue with the blogger page so I am writing day 21 as a continuation of day 20. I cannot stop now as I promised to myself to write one page a day!

Today is Sunday and I must admit I am pretty tired after only two hour of sleep! I went to see the Carnival Winner Parade with only 6 fantasias selected out of 12. My spot in sector 9 was very good as I could see more dresses and masks' details and dances I missed on the first parade day. The performance started at 10pm on Saturday and ended at 6am the day after and it was spectacular as usual! I did also a lot of movies- intentionally not high definition- and the material I have is enough to edit some videos for a future project. Enjoy this small selection and see you tomorrow!

DAY 20

Only six day to go. The time of the opening is getting closer and closer so we decided to go to work also today that is Saturday until 3pm because after that the Centro becomes empty and it is more dangerous to walk alone. This is how life in Rio is! I went to buy more foam boxes and I invited Janette, the vendor of the shop, to come to the opening as well plus another man that was there and helped to translate my English! Once back to the studio I assembled  the totem as higher as I could (I have still more boxes to go) and on Monday I will test the dry ice.

At 3pm Miguel Sayad arrived and he invited us to go to have a tour at Santa Teresa area to visit a very nice museum called Chacara do Ceu. This museum was the home of Raymond Ottoni de Castro Maya built in 1950. It has been conserved as it was at the time when the owner was living there.

Than we all went to have a early dinner together and we celebrated with a tasty traditional dish made with tail of ox at Bar do Serafin.  Funny to know that my husband Chris Verheyden is born in the year of the Ox for the Chinese astrology so we celebrate the dish on his honour!

LARGO DAS ARTES: DAY 19

The curator Fernanda Lopez came today to help us with the installation of the our group show happening soon. Lots to think about and to do!!! The work is not finished yet  and as usual we need to come up with a name and create the promotional card and invitation! We did a brainstorm with Frederico Pellachin and we came up with the name Sync as for Synchronicity as we are working at the same thematic: me, Alina Teodorescu and Luka Moncaleano.

I am working in simultaneity  with the totem idea made with foam boxes that will be filled up with dry ice that at contact with water will create a cloud of steam and the other project is printing the sequence of fans that replicates the sequence of tides in nature. Printing here is not so easy, the first tentative was a failure so I am still searching for a good place where to print. Not so much time left though.. Fortunately I completed the videos!

LARGO DAS ARTES: DAY 18

Today back to Largo das Artes studio to meet Felippe Moraes and discuss about our work, all three os us, me, Alina Teodorescu and Luka Moncaleano. We are doing well and in someway all three touching the same subject of spirituality although developed in a very different way. My work is approaching rigour and ethereal/mystical, Alina religious and confronting, Luka ritualistic/anthropological. Felippe suggested me to look at the Chaos' theory and download the 'Story of Maths' at BBC website. Great link!

Than I went out for a late lunch with my friends, but before eating we stopped at a little church close by. Beside the church there was a little door where all the 'ex voti' made with wax were kept and nobody could stop me from doing photos... I am sorry for my friends I miss lunch with them. I asked Miguel Sayad were to find the place where these amazing wax objects are made... It is called Cera Tiradentes that means "wax pull out the teeth" 7 hours far North of Rio.

After 18 days here in Rio I am still not able to use the old style local mobile so I couldn't contact my friends. I decided to eat a delicious carne pastel (meat pastry) instead with a big glass of orange juice at Larajada Acat founded in 1970! We find each other once back to the studio and thanks to Luka, now I know how to contact him in case of need.

Miguel took us home driving his car through Santa Teresa area where we stopped to see a nocturne view of favelas. On the right of the photo below you can see Sambodromo platform where the Winners Carnival Parade will be performed on Saturday 21st... and guess what I will be there once again!

LARGO DAS ARTES: DAY 17

Also today I worked all day on my project that maybe I will call Tidal Bore that is the actual Pororoca wave natural phenomena created by the meeting of two waters: Atlantic Ocean and Rio Amazon river. The phenomena is happening during the alignment of the sun and the moon and February-March are the best months for the powerful wave to merge! At the moment the ceiling fans, as metaphor for moving energy, sound and air, are my constant object of observation and amusement... I edited an interesting hypnotic acoustic video that I will show inside of a digital tablet. I would like to position the tablet at the entrance of the dark room as an introduction to the the dark room where it ill be projected a second acoustic video.

LARGO DAS ARTES: DAY16

Today I decided to stay at home working for the next group show on the 26th of February! Largo das Artes is closed for the carnival until tomorrow afternoon so I am editing in my bedroom and take some breaks in the nearby garden of Miguel and Paola. I can see the view of Corcovado mountain from there and a pristine swimming pool.

I am not alone. I have Preto and Bela with me, two gentle dogs looking after the place and also Marcus the handy and local helper who loves play guitar during his free time. Today he offered me a huge Jackfruit I already saw yesterday at the Botanical Garden. With a long stick he removed the fruit from the tree that squashed in the soil ready to eat! The taste is a mix of banana and melon with a slippery texture... And than he also gave me a cusp of banana just in time because I am running out of it for my yogurt at breakfast!!! What a marvellous sustainable garden!!!
